Los Altos Hills Historical Society (LAHHS), a non-profit organization,
is dedicated to preserving the history of the community. Some
of California's earliest non-native Americans, such as Juana Briones,
the Taaffes and the Murphys, settled in the area, and their properties
are still distinguishable.

A plan to raze Wallace Stegner's former Los Altos Hills home and
writing studio hit a speed bump over the weekend when a national
organization asked the town to do a full environmental review
of the project.
"There is significant evidence that the Stegner home and
study are historic resources subject to (the California Environmental
Quality Act)," the National Trust for Historic Preservation
wrote in a letter the town received Saturday. "Wallace Stegner's
importance as a novelist and environmentalist are legendary."
Planning officials were scheduled Tuesday to consider allowing
the property's current owners to build a 7,337-square-foot home
and 240-square-foot swimming pool but postponed taking any action.
Planning Director Debbie Pedro continued the hearing to an undetermined
date so the city could review the National Trust's request.
