Fund for Stegner's Study

The Los Altos Hills Historical Society invites contributions to the Fund for Stegner's Study. We are a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit corporation, so such donations are potentially tax deductible.

A number of people who knew or admired Wallace Stegner were surprised to learn recently that his former residence was being Fast Tracked for demolition. A movement spontaneously arose to try to preserve his small Study, which is a separate structure behind the garage that overlooks an oak forest where he wrote many famous books. We plan to move it to another site where it can serve as a mini-museum honoring his work.

However even though the current owners of the property have agreed to donating it provided that it is moved in a timely fashion, there is uncertainty about whether we will be able to accomplish this goal, as discussed below, so we also pledge that if we are unable to do it that all donations will be refunded.

Here are the main uncertainties.

(1) The proposed permit for demolition of the former Stegner residence is currently on hold because of a CEQA challenge citing the historical significance of the site. If in the meantime some person or agency manages to buy the property and use it for another purpose then our project will be terminated.

(2) The current owner might change his mind about donating the Study.

(3) We might not be able to find a suitable destination for the Study and obtain the necessary permits to move it in time for the proposed demolition. Note that in order to remove the Study we must wait for the garage to be demolished, then bring the Study over that site and out to the driveway in a timely manner.

(4) We need to round up the necessary funds to effect the move before it begins.

(5) Who knows what?
